Australian & Victorian incentives

Placing your post-production, digital and visual effects work in Australia — and in Victoria specifically — can significantly reduce your costs through government incentives that stack. Here's the short version.

The federal PDV Offset — 30%

The Australian Government's Post, Digital and Visual Effects (PDV) Offset is a 30% rebate on Qualifying Australian Production Expenditure for post, digital and VFX work. It applies regardless of where the project is shot — your production can film anywhere in the world and still claim the offset on the post and VFX done here. Projects need to meet a minimum spend threshold (AU$500,000 in qualifying PDV expenditure) to be eligible.

Victorian incentives — up to a further 15%

On top of the federal offset, Victoria offers the Victorian Digital Screen Rebate (VDSR) for post-production, VFX, animation and digital games work carried out in the state with local workers: up to 10% for general applicants and up to 15% for majority Victorian-owned companies, with a minimum spend of AU$500,000. It can be combined with the federal PDV Offset and other Victorian screen incentives.

What it means for your project

For eligible work placed in Victoria, the federal and state incentives can stack — up to around 45% back on qualifying expenditure. Combined with a favourable exchange rate and Melbourne's deep crew base, it's one of the most competitive places in the world to finish a film.
